Description

Position: Certified Instructional Aide 1-1 - 180 days.  This position includes an extensive benefits package.

  

Basic Function:

 

The Certified Instructional Aide assists the special education department by supporting the special education students in need of services. The aide works with the special education teacher and regular education teachers in providing appropriate learning experiences for students. This individual may supplement instruction given by the teacher and assists in the delivery of specially designed educational, physical and /or health related services or other supports as deemed necessary in the student’s IEP. Certified Instructional Aides also support the day-to-day activities in each school building, such as supervising lunch and/or recess, assisting in bus arrival or dismissal duties, monitoring hallways or exit areas before and/or after school, etc.

 

Aide assignments will be made by the building principals in collaboration with the special education teachers, Special Education Coordinator, and/or Assistant Superintendent. Terms of Employment: Student Calendar Days (180), Act 80 days as determined by administration, and 20 additional hours of annual training as scheduled by the special education department. This position is not eligible for membership in any collective bargaining unit. This position reports to and is evaluated annually by the Principal in the building where assigned.

 

Education and Experience:

  

Certified Instructional aides must have at least 2 years of post-secondary study, OR possess an Associate’s Degree or higher degree, OR meet a rigorous standard of quality as demonstrated through State assessment for the purposes of attaining the Highly Qualified Status Certificate. This certification process must be completed within 30 days of initial employment.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 

This individual must possess strong interpersonal and collaboration skills. This individual should have excellent oral and written communication skills. Certified Instructional Aides should possess compassion and empathy for students as well as a high level of social sensitivity and clear understanding of the need for confidentiality in all communications.

 

Authorities and Responsibilities: 

 

  • Assists the special education department in the delivery of services to students.
  • Assists the special education department in the implementation of an IEP and associated specially designed instructional strategies, both in the regular education setting as well as the special education environment.
  • Implements teacher developed lesson plan supports (accommodations and modifications) as directed by the special education teacher.
  • Supports the student(s) and teachers in the collection and scoring of student progress instruments for the purposes of monitoring and collection of data for use in IEP development.
  • Proctor State tests as assigned and trained.
  • Communicates all relevant data to appropriate school personnel in timely and informative manner.
  • Maintains student, classroom, and building level confidentiality.
  • Provides a support system that encourages a release of responsibility to the student and encourages student/learner independence.
  • Collaborates with staff in a manner that fosters teamwork in service to students.
  • Discusses any problems that interfere with student’s educational process with appropriate personnel.
  • Supports student behavior in a positive, proactive manner consistent with the structure established by established school rules, the regular education teacher, a student specific behavior plan, and in keeping with the building specific positive behavior program.
  • Enforces all rules and expectations governing the safety, health, and welfare of all students.
  • Helps to maintain a clean, orderly, and safe classroom / school environment.
  • Performs associated clerical tasks as assigned by the special education teacher, coordinator of special education, or building principal.
  • Works with appropriate technology applications and classroom resources and materials in support of meeting the provisions in student’s IEP.
  • Assists in providing for the physical needs and/or personal hygiene needs of students as directed and trained by the special education teacher, school nurse, related service personnel, coordinator of special education, or principal.
  • Initiates self-improvement and growth activities on the job as well as fulfilling the ongoing training requirements of 20 hours annually.
  • Performs any and all duties assigned by the building principal.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary – able to sit for extended periods of time, but may involve walking and standing (periodically as required), is able to lift and carry up to twenty-five pounds (25 lbs.).
  • Dexterity – finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator), eye-hand coordination (office equipment, etc.)
  • Auditory and Visual Requirements – within normal range, with or without correction.

 

Worksite Environment:

  • Primarily Indoors in classroom settings, but may be assigned to supervise cafeteria or playgrounds as well as entrance / dismissal areas specific to assigned building.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Relevant criminal histories and child abuse clearances.
  • Highly qualified status
  • Valid PA Driver’s License Problem Solving Skills
  • Must exhibit high levels of problem solving skills for overall efficiency and productivity in the school environment.

 Mental Demands:

  • Must have a steady response to unpredictable situations.
  • Must demonstrate independent judgment and discretion in making decisions as well as collaboration skills and interpersonal skills in working with students, staff, and administration.
  • Must be able to manage multiple student needs, student work projects and important timelines.
