Qualifications

Knowledge and skills in general maintenance and repairs, which include plumbing, heating, electrical, painting, carpentry, etc. must be multi-skilled in the trades. This position reports to and is evaluated annually by the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds. This position includes an extensive benefits package including, but not limited to medical, dental, retirement benefits and life insurance. 

 

Summary of Position

The general maintenance person is responsible for all aspects of repairs and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment. There are no supervisory responsibiliites. This is a twelve month position. 

 

Performance Responsibilites

  1. Responsible for repairs and preventative maintenance of buildings and equipment in the school district that ordinarily would not be a normal function of a custodian.
  2. Coordinates a program for planning preventative maintenance in conjunction with the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds.
  3. Becomes familiar with all aspects of building systems (heating, electrical, air conditioning, and general building construction, etc.) so that normal maintenance of these systems can be performed by this individual. Reports to the Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds all major or serious emergency repairs needed.
  4. Learns the normal operation of each building in the school district so that her or she can substitute for any custodian who may be absent.
  5. Responsible for maintenance and repairs of all school-owned vehicles.
  6. On call at all times for emergency duty and/or any additional duty requiring overtime which may be specified by the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds or the Director of Administrative Services.
  7. Periodically checks all safety devices including fire-fighting equipment. Responsible for ensuring that all equipment and supplies meet and pass state and federal regulations and inspections.
  8. Performs any other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
  9. Calls vendors for maintenance assistance when necessary to keep buildings in good state of repair.
  10. Inspects all roofs and roof drains annually to ensure proper drainage and good state of repair of roofs. Must ensure all drains are clear of debris to allow for good drainage.
  11. Must become fully knowledgeable of each building "emergency shutdown" procedure in the event of an emergency.
  12. Must perform skilled labor functions to include the ability to do electrical wiring, plumbing, boiler maintenance, mechanical, and some HVAC work.
  13. Must be knowledgeable about the athletic field lay-out.
  14. Will be primarily responsible for the removal of snow from the district parking lots. 

Physical Requirements:  

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking.
  • Must be physically able to climb ladders, bend, or crawl into awkward spaces.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at a time.
  

Auditory and Visual Requirements:  Must be within normal range

 

Worksite Environment:  Both indoors and outdoor weather during the workday.

 

Licenses and Certification:

  • Relevant clearances required by law
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License

 

Problem Solving Skills:  Must exhibit high levels of problem solving skills for overall efficiency and productivity.

 

Mental Demands: 

  • Must have a steady response to unpredictable situations.
  • Must demonstrate independent judgment and discretion in making decisions.
  • Must be able to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Must effectively communicate students and all staff members.
